How to open and read a TikTok data export
Find the correct JSON file, load it into a private browser-based viewer, and move from a dense export to useful searches, timelines, and dedicated explorers.
Unzip the download from TikTok, locate the exported .json file, open the TikTok viewer, and choose or drop that file onto the page. Unpack My Data processes it in your browser and organizes recognized sections without uploading the JSON.
Extract the downloaded archive
TikTok commonly delivers account data as a compressed archive. Your browser-based viewer needs the JSON file inside that archive, not the ZIP file itself.
- Move the downloaded archive to a private folder on a device you control.
- Use your operating system's extract or unzip command.
- Keep the extracted folder structure intact until you identify the data file.
If you do not have an export yet, start with the guide to downloading your TikTok data as JSON.
Locate the JSON export
Look through the extracted folder for a file ending in .json. Names and folder layouts can change, so use the file extension and contents rather than relying on one exact filename.
If several JSON files are present, begin with the file that contains broad account sections such as activity, messages, likes and favorites, profile settings, posts, live activity, or shopping records. Loading the wrong JSON file will not damage it; the viewer will either show the structure it finds or explain that it cannot process the file.
Choose or drop the file
Open the TikTok data export viewer. Select Choose JSON file and pick the file from the extracted folder, or drag the JSON onto the drop area.
The file is decoded, parsed, mapped, and indexed in a Web Worker so the page can report progress. You can cancel while it is loading. When processing finishes, the import area is replaced by the export overview.
Opening the page directly from a downloaded HTML file may prevent browser workers from running. Use the live HTTPS viewer instead.
Move from the overview to exact records
Start with the overview for total records, detected data areas, a date timeline, and a privacy reminder. The data-area cards open purpose-built explorers where the export format is recognized.
Search across the export
Use global search for words that may appear in comments, messages, usernames, searches, product records, or links. Search results show their source path; selecting one opens the exact exported record and lets you move into its source section.
Use the dedicated explorers
- Activity Explorer: filter activity types and dates, review monthly patterns, inspect individual fields, and export filtered CSV data.
- Message Explorer: search full conversation histories, filter by person, date, or sender, and export CSV or Markdown.
- Favorites Explorer: compare favorite types, search links and names, inspect records, and export filtered CSV data.
- Other data areas: review recognized summaries or generic sections when TikTok supplies a format without a dedicated explorer.
Know what the viewer cannot recover
The viewer explains what is present in the file; it cannot prove that the export is a complete history of the account. TikTok may omit, rename, expire, or summarize records, and the export schema can change over time.
- Deleted or omitted records cannot be reconstructed from the file.
- Private, removed, restricted, or expired video links may no longer open.
- Message attachments can appear as text references or be absent.
- Favorite collection names may be present without reliable video membership.
- Dates and relationships are interpreted from the fields TikTok provides.
Select Limitations in the viewer at any time for the current product boundaries. When you finish, use Clear loaded data, close the tab, or refresh the page. Keep or securely delete the original export according to your own needs.
